Automotive companies are under pressure to adapt their IT infrastructure to the increasing demands for speed, flexibility and efficiency. Traditional methods of managing applications and services often fail to keep pace with trends. Containerization and orchestration using Kubernetes have become key technologies for IT infrastructure modernization.
The trend in the industry is towards the adoption of cloud solutions and IT process automation. Container as a Service (CaaS) represents an evolution in this area, providing a platform that simplifies the deployment, management and scaling of containerized applications. This approach allows companies to focus on development and innovation while infrastructure complexity is abstracted and automated.

Challenges
Volkswagen Group faced several key challenges in IT infrastructure. The main issue was the need for more efficient management and operation of the Kubernetes cluster, which is critical for many of the company’s modern applications and services. Traditional cluster management methods were time-consuming, error-prone, and insufficiently scalable to meet the company’s growing demands.
Another challenge was the optimization of resource utilization and reduction of overall infrastructure costs. Volkswagen Group needed a solution that would enable elastic scaling of resources based on current needs, thereby eliminating waste while ensuring high service availability.
In addition, ensuring continuous availability of services during updates and changes in configurations posed a significant technical challenge. It was necessary to find a way to implement changes and updates without disrupting the operation of critical systems.
The Volkswagen Group has set the following goals for the Container as a Service (CaaS) implementation project:
- Automate Kubernetes cluster management to increase efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
- Achieve high elasticity and availability of services, allowing rapid adaptation to changing requirements.
- Optimise resource utilisation and reduce overall infrastructure costs.
- Ensure reliable monitoring and performance management of the Kubernetes cluster.
- Implement a robust system for continuous updates and configuration changes without disrupting operations.
Migration Process and Strategy
To achieve the set objectives, a complex Container as a Service (CaaS) solution was designed and implemented. This solution included the deployment and operation of an advanced Kubernetes cluster management platform that automated key processes and provided the necessary flexibility and scalability.
Technical solution consisting of several key components:
- Automated management of cluster: Implementation of tools for automatic deployment, scaling, and updating Kubernetes cluster, thus eliminating the need for manual intervention and the risk of human errors.
- Dynamic scaling: Creating a system that automatically adjusts the capacity of the cluster based on the current load, to optimize resource utilization and reduce costs.
- Advanced monitoring and alerting: The deployment of a comprehensive monitoring solution that provides real-time overview of the status of the cluster, the performance of the applications and use of resources. This system allows you to proactively address potential problems.
- A robust test environment: Create isolated test environment that accurately replicates the production settings. This allows for thorough testing of all the changes and updates prior to deployment into production.
- Automated backup and restore: The implementation of the system for regular backups of the configuration of the cluster and the critical data, with the possibility of a quick recovery in case of need.
The implementation of this solution were carried out in several stages, starting from a thorough analysis of the existing infrastructure and requirements. Then was created the pilot environment for the verification of the concept, followed by a gradual deployment in a production environment.
Challenges and overcoming the challenges
- Ensure continuous availability: One of the main challenges was to ensure the uninterrupted availability of the services during the updates and changes in configurations. This problem was solved through the implementation of the strategy of the gradual deployment of the (rolling updates) and use advanced techniques such as blue-green deployments. These approaches make it possible to do changes with minimal impact to the operation.
- The complexity of the migration of existing applications: Move existing applications to the new CaaS environment was a significant challenge. The solution was to create a detailed migration plan for each application, which included an analysis of the dependencies, optimize the code for kontajnerizáciu and progressive testing in an isolated environment.
- Security and compliance: The implementation of robust security measures and strict regulatory requirements in the automotive industry were the key. This issue was addressed by deploying advanced security instruments, implementation of strict policies for access and regular audit of security.
- Optimizing the performance: Achieve optimum performance in distribuovanom environment of Kubernetes required a considerable effort. The solution was to deploy advanced tools for performance analysis, optimization of the configuration of the cluster and the implementation of the automatic škálovania on the basis of the defined metrics.
- Training and adaptation to the team: The transition to the new CaaS solution required significant changes in the working practices of the IT team. This problem was solved by a comprehensive training programme, the creation of detailed documentation, and providing on-going support during the adaptation period.
Results
The implementation of a Container as a Service (CaaS) solution delivered significant and measurable results for Volkswagen Group. Service availability dramatically improved, reaching an impressive level of 99.9%. This high level of availability ensured that critical systems and applications remained operational virtually continuously, which had a direct positive impact on the company's overall operational efficiency.
One of the most significant achievements of the project was to achieve a reduction of the cost of infrastructure. This reduction was achieved thanks to the optimization of resource utilization, which allowed the CaaS solution. Automatic scaling and efficient allocation of computing resources have led to the elimination of waste and better use of available capacity.
In addition to these quantitative results, the project has also brought a number of qualitative improvements. IT teams have recorded significant productivity increase thanks to the automation of routine tasks associated with the management of the Kubernetes cluster. The time required to deploy new applications and services are significantly shortened, allowing for faster response to changing market requirements.
Volkswagen Group appreciated the reliability and efficiency of the deployed solutions. The flexibility and scalability of the new system have been identified as key factors that promote long-term strategy of the digital transformation of the company. IT teams Volkswagen Group also positively evaluated the improved visibility and control over the infrastructure, which provide advanced monitoring tools implemented as part of CaaS solutions. This enabled to proactively address potential problems and optimize system performance.
The key impacts of the project include:
✓ Dramatic improvement availability of services at the level of 99,9%what to ensure continuous operation of critical systems.
✓ Significant cost reduction on infrastructure, achieved thanks to the optimization of resource utilization.
✓ Increase agility IT departments, enabling faster deployment of new applications and services.
✓ Improve operating efficiency thanks to the automation of routine tasks Kubernetes cluster.
✓ Increase visibility and control over IT infrastructure, enabling proactive problem solving.
