Migration to Amazon RDS
for DiAR system

The DiAR (Digitaler Ausschussraum) system is a quality management tool designed to improve the handling of defective materials in automotive production. Originally, the system relied on a manual process to detect and report defects, which led to inefficiencies and feedback delays on production lines. DiAR was developed to automate this process, improve quality through faster feedback and ensure transparency through online reporting. The system has been successfully tested in the assembly halls of Volkswagen Slovakia.

The Issue

The primary goal of the migration to Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) was to leverage cloud-based infrastructure for scalability, reliability, and security. The system needed to support a modern tech stack, handle data securely, and scale according to the production needs.

Migration Process and Strategy

Assessment and Planning:

  • Technical Constraints: DiAR had to be compliant with DPP (Digital Production Platform) and AWS architecture principles. This included using standard AWS services like RDS for database management and ensuring compatibility with the DPP's enterprise architecture.
  • Organizational Constraints: The project faced tight timelines, necessitating a rapid deployment of the solution. The simplicity of integration and minimal downtime during migration were critical.

 

Technical Migration to RDS:

  • Database Requirements: The DiAR system required an MS SQL database for data storage. RDS was chosen to provide a managed database service that could handle the operational aspects such as backups, scaling, and high availability.
  • Architecture Integration: The DiAR system was integrated into the AWS ecosystem, using AWS Fargate to manage containerized applications, with the RDS providing the backend database services. This setup allowed for a scalable and resilient architecture capable of handling the load from multiple production sites.

 

Security and Compliance:

  • Data Encryption: RDS was configured with encryption for data at rest and in transit, ensuring compliance with Volkswagen Group's IT security requirements.
  • User Access and Authentication: The system used AWS Cognito integrated with Volkswagen’s Cloud-IDP for managing user authentication and authorization, ensuring that only authorized personnel could access the system.

 

Testing and validation:

  • Load Testing: The system underwent rigorous performance testing to ensure it could handle the expected load, including peak user access and high transaction volumes.
  • Security Testing: Source code analysis and security audits were performed to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.

 

Deployment and Rollout:

  • Staged Deployment: The migration followed a staged approach, with the system first deployed in a development environment before rolling out to production. This approach allowed for incremental testing and validation at each stage.
  • Monitoring and Support: AWS CloudWatch was employed for monitoring the performance and health of the RDS instance, with automated alerts set up for any potential issues.

Results

✓  Scalability:
The system can now scale horizontally and vertically to accommodate increasing data volumes and user numbers without significant performance degradation.

The use of RDS with multi-AZ deployment ensures that the system achieves a high level of availability, meeting the 99.9% uptime requirement.

✓  Enhanced Security:
By utilizing AWS-managed services, the system benefits from built-in security features such as automated backups, encryption, and compliance with industry standards.

  • Vendor Lock-In Risk: Although the migration to AWS RDS was successful, there is a potential risk of vendor lock-in, as the system is heavily reliant on AWS services. To mitigate this, the system architecture was designed with portability in mind, using containerization to allow for easier migration to other platforms if necessary.
  • Data Migration Complexity: Migrating data from the legacy system to RDS required careful planning to avoid data loss and ensure data integrity. This process involved multiple rounds of data validation and consistency checks.
