Moving an HR controlling solution to the cloud for Slovak Telekom and T-Mobile Czech Republic

The new HR controlling solution needed to operate independently of the existing infrastructure. We designed a pilot project to migrate existing solutions to MS Azure.

The client: Slovak Telekom and T-Mobile Czech Republic

Slovak Telekom and T-Mobile CZ are among the largest telecommunications providers on the Slovak and Czech markets. They are part of Deutsche Telekom Group, a global telecommunications company serving more than 180 million customers in 50 countries.

Both companies position themselves as technology leaders. They bring new solutions to market and adopt current technology trends, drawing on international experience to meet the expectations of even the most demanding customers.

Staying a technology leader calls for constant progress, stability, and above all partners with strong technical expertise. That is one reason for our successful and continuing cooperation on digitalization and IT modernization.

The problem

The existing on-premises infrastructure did not meet the requirements set by the HR department. Because the new HR controlling solution processes sensitive employee data, it had to be independent of that infrastructure. The department also needed considerably more flexibility in how the solution was deployed and how changes were managed and released, within weeks or months.

The requirements included:

  • access restricted to the HR department,
  • simple operation and maintenance, entirely within the HR department,
  • minimal cost for extending the technical infrastructure,
  • fast, on-demand scalability as the application develops.

The solution

The solution that best met both the technical and the business requirements was a move to MS Azure. The pilot project set out to create a cloud foundation for existing and new solutions alike.

The HR Controlling department became the sole owner of the MS Azure services in use (Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, Cloud Services, Azure Blob Storage, Azure SQL), with no need to administer, maintain, or operate IT resources. The PaaS solution has no fixed costs, low running costs, and requires no CAL licenses.

Setup, configuration, and migration were delivered by the supplier, together with documentation and training. The implementation included object-level security, with access rights managed according to the organizational structure.

Results and benefits

The move to the cloud made it possible to prepare a prototype, migrate, and manage subsequent changes quickly. HR Controlling can now respond to required changes within weeks or months, without involving or affecting IT operations. The solution can be scaled on demand, entirely within the HR department’s control.

  • Higher performance, lower costs, better scalability
  • HR Controlling is the sole owner of the data and the only department with access
  • The owner has access to all data, both source and processed, to all measures and all outputs
  • Business departments see only predefined outputs, with employee-level self-service
  • IT has no access to the data
  • HR support acts as the key user and administrator of the solution
